To Miami City Officials: Rethink the Baylink!

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.
— Martin Luther King Jr.

Let's not be silent about the Baylink project and its potential unintended consequences for our beloved city, a national treasure.

As residents of this beautiful City, who support mass transit, we are deeply concerned about the future of our community and the impact that this proposed project may have on our neighborhoods.

We believe that it is essential for the City to make informed decisions about the future of our transportation system, and that is why we are asking the city to reconsider the Baylink project. The current proposal is based on incorrect, obsolete data, and under-stated consequences of the proposed location for this project.

That is why we have come together to request that City and County Officials rethink the Baylink project and gather the data necessary to make an informed decision.

We suggest that most of the workforce and visitors to our city need to access venues north of where the Baylink line located on 5th Street and Lenox and 5th and Washington is being proposed.

It is our assertion that the I-195/Julia Tuttle Causeway/41st St. corridor would be a better location for this rail line. This corridor encompasses the vast Mount Sinai Medical Complex, Hotel District (including the Fountainebleau , Faena, and W hotel), the Miami Beach Convention Center and other noteworthy restaurants and entertainment venues. Bottom line, all mass transit options should be considered not just the current recycled one.

Together, we can make a difference and ensure that the future of transportation in Miami Beach is one that best serves the needs of our community.

Sincerely,

Residents of Miami Beach

  • Having witnessed the destruction of Bangkok city streets after the construction of the Skytrain, I can’t accept to see this happen to Miami Beach.

  • It will be tons of traffic while construction and it will empty for most the time just like the one at Brickell

  • The County is trying to sneak this project in without proper public engagement.

  • I think it is a bad idea.

  • This money can be spent on upgrading degraded infrastructure and improving life for all. Please rethink another boondoggle of fiscal irresponsibility.

  • Transform one car lane on the bridge into an exclusive bus/tramway lane : less cars, less pollution , less environmental impact, less costs. . Problem solved !

    Marion Rubin

  • Fiscal irresponsibility slow ridership will catch up to budget finances and having Miami Beach to cut public services and the location along 5th street is the worst idea ever

  • Soy vecino de Alton road . Esta construcción incrementará la inseguridad en el área

  • One would think the ultimate goal is to convert Miami Beach into a Amusement park, rather than a pleasant place to vacation or reside.

FAQs

  • It is proposed elevated metromover coming down government cut Cruise Ship Channel along MacArthur Causeway over the proposed Pedestrian Bridge down the middle of 5th street with stops at 5th & Lenox & 5th & Washington.

  • As one of many potential mass transit solutions to address traffic needs.

  • There is current traffic congestion because of the new signature bridge construction on I-395 at the West end of MacArthur Causeway (by Perez museum). In addition, the Venetian Causeway road construction more traffic is being diverted to MacArthur causeway further exasperating the problem. The new Signature Bridge roadway design and completion of Venetian Causeway constructions will address majority of current intermittent traffic back up West bound by the signature bridge. Current Baylink proposal requires more than a one seat ride.

  • Only option the County has looked at and proposing is having the Baylink come down Government Cut adjacent to MacArthur Causeway and dead ending on 5th St.

We urge the county to look at all mass transit options to maximize connectivity for all residents, employers, employees, and tourists to more efficiently serve north, mid, & south beach communities. Current proposal drops off at the south end of Miami Beach and passengers would have to find alternate modes of transportation to go north to the largest employers. This is further exacerbate traffic.

  • County currently has plans to build BRT (Bus rapid Transit). It's a designated bus lane that run on the roadway shoulders for both MacArthur & I-195/ Julia Tuttle. All options need to be explored to provide the most efficient and cost effective options for residents. This also would include I-195 Julia Tuttle, 79th St Causeway, & 123rd St. Broad Causeway.

  • City only studied one old existing Genting Casino traffic study from 2019 to justify the current proposal and secure funding for only that option.

Visual Pollution of an elevated concrete metromover with concrete pilings going into Government Cut every 20-30ft. This will have significant environmental impact on sea grass for manatees and endangering coral.
